Transformer:

In power plant, electric generator used to create an emf.emf thus produced is of very high voltage before using it for domestic purpose that voltage must be decreased 

Thus device that used to decrease or increase voltage produced by electric generator, is known as Transformer .

In transformer there exist primary and secondary coil that are linked to a laminated iron core.

Reason to use laminated iron core is to reduce eddy current  ( circulating current leads to power loss).

From electric generator, Alternating current passes through the loops of wire of primary coil. It created changing magnetic field .in the same way, As magnetic field produced inside a solenoid

This changing magnetic field travels through iron core to the secondary coil , 

changing magnetic field produced changing magnetic flux in secondary coil.

We know by faraday's law .changing magnetic flux induces a emf . 

As a result a voltage induced in secondary coil.

That voltage has same frequency as the voltage in primary coil, as a result a induced emf in the secondary coil , an alternating current produced in the coil that current we uses for domestic purpose
